Why Mental Health Awareness Month Matters

We All Have Mental Health.
Mental Health Awareness Month often encourages important conversations around wellbeing, stress, burnout and emotional health. For me, one of the most important reminders is actually quite simple: we all have mental health.
Just as we all experience physical health differently throughout our lives, our mental and emotional wellbeing also shifts depending on what we are carrying, experiencing and navigating. Sometimes we feel resilient and balanced. At other times we may feel overwhelmed, anxious, low, exhausted or emotionally stretched.
Yet despite growing awareness around mental health and counselling support, many people still feel pressure to minimise their struggles or continue coping quietly on their own.
When Struggling Isn’t Always Visible
In counselling, I often meet people who appear to be functioning well from the outside whilst privately struggling underneath. They are still working, parenting, supporting others and meeting responsibilities — often whilst feeling emotionally exhausted themselves.
Mental health difficulties do not always look dramatic or obvious. Sometimes they simply look like somebody trying very hard to hold everything together.
This is one of the reasons Mental Health Awareness Month matters. Not because the month itself changes everything, but because it can create space for more openness, understanding and compassion. It reminds people that struggling is part of being human and not something to feel ashamed of.
The Importance of Feeling Heard
Talking about mental health does not automatically solve problems, and counselling is not about offering quick fixes. But feeling heard, understood and less alone can often be an important starting point.
Sometimes support begins with a simple, honest conversation:
“I’m not doing as well as I thought I was.”
And often, giving ourselves permission to acknowledge that can be far more powerful than continuing to push through alone.
